Written for a parent who does not read Chinese. You do not need to know the characters to help. You need to know which ones are easy to mix up.

Characters that look alike

Children often mix up 晴 and 阴 because both contain the sun radical 日, but 晴 has 青 on the right while 阴 has 月. 今天 and 今年 share the first character 今, so pupils sometimes write the wrong second character when copying. 下午 and 下雨 both start with 下, which can lead to confusion if the child is rushing.

Words that sound alike

The pinyin for 今天 and 秋天 both end in tiān, so a child might write the wrong first character if they only catch the second syllable. 下雨 and 下午 share the same first syllable xià, which can cause a mix-up during dictation. 冷 and 风 are not soundalikes, but pupils sometimes mishear lěng as léng and write the wrong tone mark.

Worth the extra practice

Practice 晴 and 阴 together because they look similar and both describe weather. Write 今天, 今年 and 九月 in short sentences so the child learns to distinguish the time words by context. Ask the child to say the full pinyin out loud before writing 下午 and 下雨 to avoid swapping them.

In Primary 1 the list is short. Usually eight to 10 items, mostly single characters and two-character words. Tingxie normally starts around week 2 or 3 of Term 1. For many children it is the first piece of graded work they ever sit.

Of the 17 words here, 13 have been seen on a real tingxie paper from a named Singapore primary school, and 今天 has appeared at 6 different schools.
