What trips children up on this list

Written for a parent who does not read Chinese. You do not need to know the characters to help. You need to know which ones are easy to mix up.

Children often mix up 叶 and 树叶 because they share the same character. They also confuse 鱼 and 鸟. The bottom stroke of 鱼 is a horizontal line, while 鸟 has a small hook that looks like a leg. The radical 月 appears in 月亮, but it is not used as a standalone word on this list.

A child may write 牛 instead of 鸟 if they mishear the tone. The word 树叶 contains 叶, so a child might only write 叶 when the teacher says 树叶. The pinyin for 鱼 is yú, which sounds like 雨, a common word they might write instead.

Practice 乌龟 and 蝴蝶 first. Both have three or four characters in pinyin and require careful stroke order. Write them slowly and check each part before moving to the next word. Keep 树叶 and 叶 separate in your practice so the child learns when to add 树.

A picture for each word

Children remember a character far better when it is attached to an image. These are the same pictures gtx shows during practice.

Where these words come from

In Primary 1 the list is short. Usually eight to 10 items, mostly single characters and two-character words. Tingxie normally starts around week 2 or 3 of Term 1. For many children it is the first piece of graded work they ever sit.

Of the 18 words here, 10 have been seen on a real tingxie paper from a named Singapore primary school, and 熊猫 has appeared at 3 different schools. Counting every school that set each word, that is 13 sightings across papers parents have sent us since April 2026. Which school set which word is not published.

4 of these 18 words are marked as set by a school at Primary 1; the rest are levelled by curriculum judgement. How we build these lists explains the difference, and why this is not an official MOE list. MOE publishes the syllabus itself: Mother Tongue Language learning, MOE.

Practise your child’s own list

Every school sets a different list. Send us a photo of the one that came home and Hua Hua builds a practice from exactly those words: each one read aloud, a picture that helps it stick, and a sheet you can print and write on. The five-step method is the same one teachers use in class.
