Where these words come from

Every word on this page was taken from a real tingxie paper a Singapore parent sent to Hua Hua, GenieOne’s 听写 assistant, then checked against MOE Primary Chinese level expectations by the Geniebook Curriculum Team.

Two signals are kept separate, because they are not equally strong. Level (Primary 1) is a curriculum judgement of when a Singapore student is typically expected to write the word. Set by a school is the stronger claim: that word appeared in a paper a school set at this level. 14 of 16 words here carry both.

This is not an official MOE word list. MOE publishes the Primary Chinese syllabus itself, and it is the authority on curriculum: Mother Tongue Language learning, MOE.

Frequently asked questions

What Primary 1 听写 words should my child know about shapes, sizes and numbers?
This page lists 16: 一、六、左右、三、大小、四、五、七 and more. 14 of them appeared in tingxie papers that Singapore schools actually set for this level. Each word has its pinyin, an English meaning and an example sentence your child can read aloud.
How is 听写 (tingxie) tested in Primary 1?
The teacher reads each word aloud, usually two or three times, and the child writes it from memory in Chinese characters. Some papers add a short sentence for dictation. It is written on paper, so practice works best with a pen rather than a screen.
How do you pronounce 一?
一 is pronounced yī. It means "one". For example: 我有一支铅笔。
How can my child practise these words at home?
Read each word aloud and let your child write it once from memory, then check against the character here. Print the practice sheet for the grid paper version. You can also send us a photo of your child's own word list on WhatsApp and get a sheet made from exactly those words.
Is this list free?
Yes. The words, meanings, example sentences and the printable sheet are free to use and free to forward to other parents. No sign-up is needed to read this page.
