What trips children up on this list

Written for a parent who does not read Chinese. You do not need to know the characters to help. You need to know which ones are easy to mix up.

Children often mix up 池 and 池塘 because the first character is identical and the second adds 塘. 羽毛 and 羊毛 share the same second character 毛, so pupils sometimes write the wrong first character. 树枝 and 树林 both start with 树, which leads to swapping 枝 and 林 when copying.

池 (chí) and 池 塘 (chí táng) share the same first syllable, so a child may write the single character when the teacher says the two-character word. 土地 (tǔ dì) and 乌鸦 (wū yā) have clear tones, but 土 can be misheard as 吐 if the child is unsure of the third tone. 翅膀 (chì bǎng) is often misheard as 吃 or 迟 because the first syllable sounds similar to common words.

Practice 孔雀 and 翅膀 together. Both contain less common characters and are easy to miswrite under time pressure. Write each word three times, then cover and write from memory. Add 池塘 to the routine because it is longer and often shortened to 池 by mistake.

A picture for each word

Children remember a character far better when it is attached to an image. These are the same pictures gtx shows during practice.

Where these words come from

By Primary 2 the lists lengthen and two-character words dominate. Teachers start reading a short phrase rather than only the word, so a child has to hold more in their head before the pencil moves.

Of the 17 words here, 11 have been seen on a real tingxie paper from a named Singapore primary school, and 羊毛 has appeared at 3 different schools. Counting every school that set each word, that is 17 sightings across papers parents have sent us since April 2026. Which school set which word is not published.

2 of these 17 words are marked as set by a school at Primary 2; the rest are levelled by curriculum judgement. How we build these lists explains the difference, and why this is not an official MOE list. MOE publishes the syllabus itself: Mother Tongue Language learning, MOE.

Practise your child’s own list

Every school sets a different list. Send us a photo of the one that came home and Hua Hua builds a practice from exactly those words: each one read aloud, a picture that helps it stick, and a sheet you can print and write on. The five-step method is the same one teachers use in class.
