What trips children up on this list

Written for a parent who does not read Chinese. You do not need to know the characters to help. You need to know which ones are easy to mix up.

Children often mix up 窗 and 篮 because both have the bamboo radical at the top. The difference is the bottom part. 窗 has 囱 inside, while 篮 has 监 below. 洗 appears in both 洗澡 and 洗脸. The right side changes the meaning. 澡 uses 喿 for washing the body. 脸 uses 佥 for the face.

The word 铃 sounds exactly like 零, which means zero. A child might write the wrong character if they only hear the sound. 阳台 and 冲凉 both end with a rising tone. A child might confuse the second syllable if they are not paying attention. 礼物 and 硬币 are clear, but 币 can be mistaken for 市 if the child is rushing.

Practice 洗澡 and 冲凉 together. They mean similar things but use different characters. Have your child write both and say the difference out loud. 关火 is also important. It is a safety phrase. Make sure your child can write it quickly and correctly without hesitation.

A picture for each word

Children remember a character far better when it is attached to an image. These are the same pictures gtx shows during practice.

Where these words come from

By Primary 2 the lists lengthen and two-character words dominate. Teachers start reading a short phrase rather than only the word, so a child has to hold more in their head before the pencil moves.

Of the 15 words here, 13 have been seen on a real tingxie paper from a named Singapore primary school, and 洗澡 has appeared at 3 different schools. Counting every school that set each word, that is 21 sightings across papers parents have sent us since April 2026. Which school set which word is not published.

6 of these 15 words are marked as set by a school at Primary 2; the rest are levelled by curriculum judgement. How we build these lists explains the difference, and why this is not an official MOE list. MOE publishes the syllabus itself: Mother Tongue Language learning, MOE.

Practise your child’s own list

Every school sets a different list. Send us a photo of the one that came home and Hua Hua builds a practice from exactly those words: each one read aloud, a picture that helps it stick, and a sheet you can print and write on. The five-step method is the same one teachers use in class.
